A comprehensive search of the PubMed database and available published literature was conducted from January 2008 up to September 2021 using syntax constructed using MeSH Database as follows: (stromectol OR Ivermectin OR "dihydroavermectin"
OR (22 AND 23-dihydroavermectin B) AND (antiviral OR virus OR COVID-19 OR SARS-CoV-2).
Consequently, unless there is evidence from large, well-designed and well-conducted controlled clinical trials to support the use of ivermectin in COVID-19 patients, it is best to avoid using the drug for this purpose. The US Food and Drug Administration, the Australian Adverse Drug Reactions Advisory Committee, the EudraVigilance system, and Vigibase (maintained by the WHO Collaborating Centre for International Drug Monitoring) were contacted for case reports of ivermectin adverse reactions in children weighing less than 15 kg however, these databases do not collect weights of individuals so no data could be contributed to this study.
In April 2020, an Australian study showed that ivermectin inhibits the replication of SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19) in a laboratory dish (not in humans). Among the earliest research included a study published online in April last year that showed how high ivermectin doses prevented the replication of SARS-COV-2, the virus responsible for COVID-19, in test tubes.
