Both reports were good, so I can’t complain. While we were home we even managed to work in one good shop and a couple of small ones as well.
As soon as we were back to the campground Gary attended workshops on blue grass and felt he learned a lot. The final Thursday was when things really got jumping. First off was the golf cart parade. You can either bring your own or have one delivered to the campground from a local golf cart rental company that the Bowens, (the owners) had made arrangements with so everyone can have a cart available to rent if desired.
The carts in the parade were decked out in a patriotic theme. One of the larger carts was also pulling a trailer filled with musicians playing. Of course there was a competition for the best decorations. There was "street" entertainment by the contestants for the next day’s beauty queen pageant.
This is all done in good clean fun. Young and old a like got a good giggle out of the antics of the performers.
Just a few miles south of Bluff Utah, you will find a sign on your left announcing Sand Island. It doesn't tell you what it is, just turn left there! You will find a rock art panel easily as big as the one we found on Potash Road in Moab! From a distance, it is hard to tell how large this panel really is.
It extends from the far left behind that big rock to the far right, beyond the frame of this picture. Remember you can click on the photos to enlarge them to full size, making seeing the rock art easier! Of course, graffitti is always a problem! The one thing I have never seen, even in the petroglyph books, is that pair of "oars" top center!
Maybe that is modern graffitti, I haven't a clue! Probably the most *** thing about Sand Island Petroglyphs is that for many years they were hidden from sight by the pesky tamerisk trees. Non-native, these plants take over everywhere in the Southwest where there is water!
Utah is trying an experiment with a worm that feeds on tamerisk (or salt cedar) and it seems to be working! The worms actually cleared out the tamerisk from in front of these petroglyphs, petroglyphs that many folk had forgotten about. 3 strange figures at the top.
Human or Alien ? From a distance, it was hard to tell this panel existed. The fence it below was the clue! There are still some tamerisk trees trying to make a come back here. Hope you enjoyed the petroglyphs from Sand Island. I should mention that there is a vey nice campground here, right on the river.
I believe it is a BLM campground. The rates were very reasonable. There were bathrooms provided and water and electric.
Camp Site Shortcuts - The Easy Way
Apparently the OBX was hit by a hurricane fourth of July weekend because we arrived at our destination and thought we were in the ghetto because there was trash and debris piled up on the sides of the street. The campground itself was in pretty good shape though considering.
Other then that there's not much to do but go to the beach, and that would have been ok but it rained all but one day we were there. The one thing I really didn't like about this campground was the fact that they didn't allow you to have a fire unless you had a fire pit that sat off the ground.
Thursday we had a great beach day, like I said I am not a beach person but i did have a good time. I had my blanket and umbrella and it was very breezy. 7 I think. Pauls parents came down that night around 8, they planned on staying with us will left for Cherrystone. When they arrived we finally ate dinner, I made marinated chicken with noodles and broccoli, I had to ask Nicole if she had extra broccoli since I only planned on cooking for the 4 of us.
